Place Value

Clear, approachable guidance with examples you can apply in everyday situations.

Take your time with each concept. Try a small example, explain the steps, and check whether the result makes sense.

Each position matters

In 4,582, the 4 represents four thousands, the 5 five hundreds, the 8 eight tens, and the 2 two ones.

Use zero as a placeholder

Zero keeps other digits in their correct positions, as in 4,052.

Compare from the left

When comparing whole numbers with the same number of digits, start with the leftmost digit and move right.

Keep practising

Return to the basics whenever a step feels unclear, and use estimates to check that your answer is reasonable.
